We form a human chain around our Muslim brothers
when they pray in the middle of our protest
Just as they secured our churches for yesterday’s mass
after the church bombing in Alexandria.
A guy defended me passionately in a public protest,
And he of a different faith has now become
my indispensable brother-in-arms in every rally.
We’ve shared the Thanksgiving turkey,
and we’ve devoured the Bakrid Biryani together,
we grace each other’s happy occasions,
and we never hesitate to stand by each other
in our times of need.
The tyrannical government can manipulate
the social media,
It could’ve taught several generations before us
how to think,
But the young generation of today
stand together in solidarity,
for tolerance is the supreme mark of an educated mind.
The thirty-year old suppressive regime,
Blundered in letting us become literate,
For no one’s puppets our educated minds are now.
We are done letting the government manipulate us
into blaming each other for its political crimes.
Our crescents and crosses now hug each other,
Christians or Muslims, we fight for freedom together.
Let this inter-faith camaraderie
Inspire men and women all around the world.
Let them take heart in seeing the proof,
that compassion transcends race and religion.
When asked to choose a faith,
Let’s follow our heart.
When asked to choose a religion,
Let us choose humanity every time.
